
Integrative Health & Well-being Coaching Certificate
Overview
The University of Houston Integrative Health and Well-being Coaching Certificate Program offers online training in behavior change, coaching, and holistic well-being across diverse cultural contexts. Aligned with the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC) standards, this program includes mentorship and prepares students for the national board examination. The certificate program is fully online, beginning with a three-day online intensive and continuing with 36 weeks of online instruction.
Health Coaching is a professional field experiencing tremendous growth in market growth. The University of Houston Integrative Health and Well-being Coaching (UH IHWC) Certificate Program trains and empowers future health coaches to help their clients and patients to develop and design their own path towards optimal health by emphasizing the well-being of the whole person. The UH IHWC Certificate Program provides an opportunity to learn from industry leaders. Our cohort model helps to create an online community and professional support.

Learning Outcomes
- Recognize signs and management of common chronic diseases.
- Describe the impact of holistic health frameworks on coaching practice.
- Organize coaching sessions, managing time and flow from start to finish.
- Identify and utilize consumer-oriented sources for coaching.
- Integrate personal development and self-care for effective practice and role modeling.
- Use evidence-based techniques for client-centered discovery, self-efficacy, and goal setting.
- Apply an integrative approach considering inclusion, access, trauma, and cultural humility.
- Define and apply Health Coaching theories and skills, including MI, Emotional Intelligence, and TTM.
- Demonstrate business and marketing practices, including an elevator speech and coaching agreement.

Program Details
- An Associate Degree or higher in any field (including Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate); or
- A licensed healthcare professional, including those in complementary health fields (such as chiropractic and naturopathic medicine); or
- At least 4,000 hours of relevant work experience; or
- Current University of Houston student in good standing in a Bachelor's degree program
Week 1 and 2:
- Preliminary Module
- Welcome and Orientation Session
- Three-day Intensive
Week 3-12:
- Weekly asynchronous modules
- Synchronous sessions every other week
- Introduction to health coaching fundamentals
- Health promotion and wellness principles and behavioral change theory
- Ethical and legal issues
- Ethical and legal issues.
- Coaching Skills Practice
Week 13-22:
- Weekly asynchronous modules
- Weekly peer-coaching practice sessions
- Synchronous sessions continue every other week
- Practical Skills Assessment (PSA)
PSA must be passed before proceeding to Phase 2
Week 1 and 2:
- Preliminary Module
- Welcome and Orientation Session
- Pre-Planning Session
- Marketing and recruitment of client volunteers, health coaching, and
- Process for health coaching session and mentoring
- Self-evaluations and self-reflections
Week 3-14:
- Client work begins
- Coaching logs every other week
- One-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty
- Complete 50 coaching sessions
- Final Coaching Assessment (FCA)
Week 15
- Online graduation ceremony
- Applicants who have special circumstances may receive special consideration for Phase 1 only. Those accepted under these conditions are classified as Special Admission students
- After completing Phase 1, these students will receive a Verification of Attendance and will not be able to apply for national board certification
- If a student has finished Phase 1, they can reapply through regular admission to proceed with Phase 2 within one year of completion
