International Education Week 2020

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of IEW is to promote the benefits of international education and cultural exchange. IEW is celebrated across the United States on an annual basis during the third week of November (the week before Thanksgiving). IEW will occur November 16-20, 2020, and all events will be held online this year. At the University of Houston, IEW is an opportunity to showcase the various global programs and international opportunities as well as celebrate our cultural diversity.

All Week

  • UH Dining will offer an international food station at Cougar Woods Dining Commons.

Monday, November 16th

  • IEW Resource Fair, 11am-1pm
    A virtual fair on MS Teams to learn more about global programs, international opportunities, and cultural student organizations. (Sponsored by ISSSO & UH Global)
  • Public Art Exhibition ‘Color Field’, 2-2:30pm; Passcode: Color
    You are cordially invited to join the Public Art of the University of Houston (Public Art UHS) and International Student and Scholar Services for a virtual tour of Color Field, the first curated exhibition of outdoor sculpture ever presented at UH and Public Art UHS's second project in its Temporary Public Art Program. (Sponsored by ISSSO)

Tuesday, November 17th

  • Learning Abroad 101, 1-2pm
    Do you know you want to go abroad, but you're not sure exactly where to start? Stop by Learning Abroad 101 for group advising on how to start your journey abroad. (Sponsored by Learning Abroad)
  • Be Your Advocate: Communicating the Value of an International Education, 6-7:30pm
    This workshop is for international students who want to better understand how to advocate for themselves when job searching and speaking with potential employers. Topics will include ways to market personal skills, communicating visa status to others and basics rights as an international worker. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from the experiences of actual current and former UH students through a series of case studies. (Sponsored by University Career Services)
  • Global Trivia Night, 7-9pm
    Join us for a fun and exciting night of trivia and games, virtual style! Test your trivia skills and global knowledge for the chance to win some awesome prizes all while engaging with your fellow Coogs. (Sponsored by Global Initiatives)

Wednesday, November 18th

  • Joy School Visit, 10-11am
    Students from International Student Organization (ISO) partnered with ISSSO will virtually speak about their countries to Middle Schoolers at The Joy School.
  • Passport for Coogs Info Session, 12-1pm
    Learn how to apply or renew your U.S. passport with the Passport for Coogs acceptance facility at this virtual info session. (Sponsored by Learning Abroad)
  • Bauer Office of Global Initiatives and Global Opportunities, 1-2pm
    Learn more about the new Office of Global Initiatives in Bauer and various global opportunities for Bauer College students. Some of these such as learning abroad and global courses are also available to UH students from other schools. (Sponsored by Bauer Office of Global Initiatives)
  • Cultural Explosion, 6-8pm
    Cultural Explosion is a cultural performance and competition part of International Education Week. We invite all RSOs to compete and showcase their culture through acts of dance, singing, and much more. Come and watch the dynamic and story-telling performances from your fellow student organizations! (Sponsored by Council for Cultural Activities (CCA))

Thursday, November 19th

  • Global Guides Global Virtual Café, 11am-1pm
    Join the UH Global Guides in this virtual edition of our Global Café to chat about travel, living abroad, and student life overseas. (Sponsored by Global Guides)
  • International Dating 101 UH Wellness, 1-2pm
    UH Wellness will provide virtual training for students on dating norms across different countries. (Sponsored by UH Wellness)
  • International Thanksgiving, 1-2pm
    International Students Organization (ISO) Will provide an overview of the Thanksgiving holiday for international students and international students will share more about their traditions and holidays. (Sponsored by International Students Organization)

Friday, November 20th

  • International Fellowship Opportunities, 12-1pm
    Virtual event about international fellowship opportunities for students such as Fulbright, CLS, Boren, DAAD RISE, etc. (Sponsored by Honors College, Office of Undergraduate Research and Major Awards)
  • International Coogs on Campus, 4-5pm
    International students from the Language and Culture Center (LCC) will share highlights and fun facts from each region currently represented in the LCC. This will be followed by an interactive game, with opportunities for Q&A throughout. (Sponsored by Language and Culture Center)
