Tech Mini-Courses

These mini courses are offered free of charge to the UH community.

Due to the current restrictions, no registration is required and all the sessions would be taught online via Zoom meetings. The Zoom link would be made available on the UH CS website at least a week prior to the class schedule.

Advanced Topics in Cloud Computing Technologies

This course would give a brief overview of the multitude of the advanced tools and evolving techno-logical offerings from providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and GCP. Tentatively, topics include server-less computing, storage optimization, and related. Also, Microsoft 365 tools (e.g., OneDrive, SharePoint) that are open to UH community would be discussed.

Containerization on Cloud

Users expect applications and software services to be available 24/7 with minimal-to-no downtime. Containerization helps packaging and running software on multiple systems while allowing frequent release cycles and updates without causing service disruptions. Kubernetes is a cluster orchestration system that helps us in enabling such containerized applications to run where and when we want and helps in finding the requisite resources and tools.

Using Containers for Seamless Computing – Docker

Containers are application modernization trends that provide an encapsulated and secured process environment to run code while freeing the user from having to worry about the libraries, dependen-cies and other requirements. They have become ubiquitous in various software supply chains and development activities. This course would give a basic overview of the Docker container runtime and demonstrate packaging and deploying sample images.

Web technologies and eCommerce on the Cloud

This course will cover the ubiquitous web technologies that are essential in developing and operating any web-based e-commerce and the typical software stack (Apache, MySQL, PHP) commonly used to achieve the same. Use cases would be demoed with the web tools deployed on a Cloud environment such as AWS.

Statistics indicate that 90% of enterprises and businesses have a cloud presence, and that 94% of all workload are expected to be handled via Cloud data centers by the end of the year. This course serves a broad overview of Cloud computing basics, terminologies, and essential tools and options to realizing a simple infrastructure as a cloud-based service (IaaS)
