Future Leaders Showcase Work in Science and Engineering Fair

54th Annual Competition Promotes Learning and Application of Science and Technology

Nearly 1,000 middle and high school students will present their science and engineering research projects at the 54th Annual Science Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) Friday, March 1, at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

One of the largest regional science and engineering fairs in the nation, SEFH has promoted the learning and application of science and technology for Texas youth since 1960, bringing together the best and the brightest students from Harris and its 22 surrounding counties. Competition categories span a broad range, including behavioral and biological sciences, physical sciences, environmental science, computer science, engineering and mathematics. Projects are judged by local scientists, physicians and engineers volunteering their time.

University of Houston (UH) joined forces with the SEFH this year. Science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) initiatives are a priority at UH, and creating a strong pipeline of students interested in those fields is important to the industries and health care facilities in the city, state and nation.

In addition to holding campus and residence hall tours for the fair participants, UH will host the fair’s award ceremonies from noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at UH’s Cullen Performance Hall. Retired NASA astronaut Bonnie Dunbar, who now leads UH’s new STEM Center, will speak at the ceremonies, which are free and open to the public. More than $60,000 in college scholarships will be awarded to approximately 200 students for the winning projects. Winners will move on to the state science fair, held later this month, earning them a chance to advance to the international competition.

The presenting sponsors of SEFH are UH, the Houston Museum of Natural Science and UH-Downtown. Platinum Sponsors are Air Liquide USA LLC and Marathon Oil Corporation, and Gold Sponsors are ExxonMobil and Shell.
