BLAFFER GALLERY AT UH HOSTS ARTISTS’ CONVERSATION MARCH 28

Art often speaks for itself. Many times, however, hearing artists and scholars discuss how works relate to the world enhances the experience of viewing an exhibition. Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, offers patrons an opportunity to engage in such dialogues with its Contemporary Salon series.

The next Contemporary Salon, conducted in conjunction with the exhibition “One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now,” is at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 28 in Blaffer Gallery. Guests include Paul Lazar and Annie-B Parson, co-directors of New York’s Big Dance Theater; artists Serena Lin Bush and Prince Thomas; and Gus Kopriva, director of Redbud Gallery. Moderating this discussion will be Terrie Sultan, director of Blaffer Gallery and Karen Farber, director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (CWMCA) at UH. This event is free and open to the public.

Lazar and Parson’s appearance with the Contemporary Salon coincides with their CWMCA residency in which they will share creative insight with UH art, music, creative writing and theater students. Lazar and Parson will return to UH for Big Dance Theater’s Houston debut with the new production “The Other Here” at 7:30 p.m. on May 2 - 3 in the Wortham Theatre.

This Contemporary Salon is presented by CWMCA in collaboration with Blaffer Gallery. The May performance of “The Other Here” will be presented by CWMCA in collaboration with the UH School of Theatre & Dance.

Inspired by the turn-of-the-century cultural salons popularized in Europe, Blaffer Gallery's Contemporary Salons enable experts and members of the public to interact on issues of the day related to the museum's current exhibitions. This interactive program is conducted in a relaxed setting that encourages intimate conversation between audience participants and guest speakers, who are chosen from a broad range of backgrounds and professional fields.

“One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now” runs through March 31. For more information about Blaffer Gallery or upcoming exhibitions, visit http://www.hfac.uh.edu/blaffer/.
