EMERGING UH ARTISTS ON VIEW DURING 2006
STUDENT EXHIBITION
Houston has a host of winter traditions, and one that is making
its mark on the city’s art scene is the University of Houston’s
School of Art Annual Student Exhibition.
Each December, Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University
of Houston, and the School of Art team up to showcase up-and-coming
UH artists. This year’s exhibition kicks off with a reception
at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1. That evening, arts patrons also are invited
to tour “Open Studios,” the work spaces and works-in-progress
of the artists. Both the reception and “Open Studios”
are free and open to the public.
Works displayed in the exhibition will include paintings, sculpture,
ceramics, graphic communications, photography, jewelry and interior
design. Faculty members selected these pieces, which were then installed
in the gallery by Blaffer’s expert staff.
“This year, the students really kicked out the jams and created
great works. It will be one of the best student shows we have ever
hosted,” said Terrie Sultan, director of Blaffer Gallery.
“The night of the opening reception will be particularly fun
because visitors will also have a chance to understand the creative
process behind these pieces during the studio open house.”
Patrons also have the opportunity to purchase students’ exhibition
pieces. Interested buyers can ask the representative at Blaffer’s
front desk for more details.
