MOVING PICTURES SERIES AT UH JUST THE TICKET FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

In an era of YouTube and camera phones, plenty of teenagers have the tools at their disposal to become instant filmmakers, with cheap means of production and even distribution readily available. What’s harder to come by is an understanding of visual storytelling that might make their movies worth watching.

Fortunately, an after-school activity designed to expose Houston high school students to cinematic classics by the likes of Laurence Olivier, Ingmar Bergman and Pedro Almodóvar may give budding auteurs the inspiration they need.

The University of Houston School of Communication and Wonderworks, a non-profit organization offering pre-college learning experiences in the fine arts, are presenting Moving Pictures, a free, weekly series of screenings of films that runs at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday through Dec. 6 in the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture Building, Room 150. Students can visit www.wonderworkshouston.org/Fall2006/MovingPictures.pdf to download an enrollment application.

Films will be introduced, screened and discussed each week by Keith Houk, clinical assistant professor of communication, and others. Each film will be accompanied by a critical article or other appropriate reading.

“Both the informal discussions and the specific films selected for the series are designed to help guide students along and find good entry points into in the work of filmmakers they might not otherwise find accessible,” Houk said.

Films for this fall include: “Hail the Conquering Hero” (Preston Sturges, 1944); “Persona” (Ingmar Bergman, 1967); “Enemies: A Love Story” (Paul Mazursky, 1989); “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (Pedro Almodóvar, 1988), Henry V (Laurence Olivier, 1944); “My Man Godfrey” (Gregory La Cava, 1936) and “Pepe le Moko” (Julien Duvivier, 1937).

Students are also encouraged to attend screenings presented in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Fellini retrospective, which runs through Oct. 8. For details of the schedule, visit www.mfah.org/films.
