C.W. MITCHELL CENTER AT UH OPENING DOORS TO NEW FACILITY OCT. 12

For the past year, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (CWMCA) at the University of Houston has offered dynamic collaborative arts programming, but it was without an official home. Now, the Center is ready to open its new facility’s doors and honor its donors, Cynthia Woods Mitchell and George P. Mitchell, along with their friends and family, and members of the media at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The opening of this new campus addition marks the beginning of a new chapter for the city’s arts scene as it will serve as a base for the Mitchell Center’s interdisciplinary arts programming and course curriculum. It also signifies the conclusion of a $4.5 million renovation to the building housing the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre and the José Quintero Lab Theatre.

Among the dignitaries to speak at the opening event are UH President Jay Gogue, Blaffer Director and Chair of the CWMCA Board of Directors Terrie Sultan and the Center’s founding donor, George P. Mitchell. Also scheduled is a performance by the UH Dance Ensemble, who will perform composer and previous CWMCA guest artist Stephen Montague’s “Just Us.” Following the performance, invited guests can take a tour of the new facility including its offices and studios.

Funded by a recent $20 million grant from George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell, the Center combines the forces of UH’s Creative Writing Program, Blaffer Gallery and Schools of Theatre, Music and Art for collaboration and experimentation. It offers public programs such as performances, exhibitions, lectures and symposia; residencies with visiting artists for creative development and teaching; courses in collaboration for UH students. All Mitchell Center projects hinge on the power of collaboration to foster innovation and generate new forms of creativity.

Among the influential, celebrated artists CWMCA is bringing to Houston in the near future are composer Philip Glass, poet Anne Waldman, dancer/choreographer Douglas Dunn, string quartet ETHEL and New York performance company Big Dance Theater.
