POETRY IN MOTION: WORDSMITH WALDMAN TEAMS WITH DANCER DUNN
IN ‘TANKS UNDER TREES’ AT UH’S MITCHELL CENTER

Words. Motion. Images. Sound. When these elements are creatively fused, the artistic possibilities are endless, as audiences at the University of Houston will soon discover.

Noted poet/spoken word artist Anne Waldman and accomplished dancer/choreographer Douglas Dunn will present a one-time collaborative performance titled “Tanks Under Trees” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11 in UH’s Jose Quintero Lab Theatre. This event is hosted by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at UH. It is free and open to the public. Space is limited and reservations can be made by calling 713-743-5548.

Waldman and Dunn are no strangers to collaborative art as they’ve combined their talents for previous performances together as well as with other renowned artists. “Tanks Under Trees,” which is based on Waldman’s book “Structure of The World Compared to a Bubble,” will provide both artists an entirely new vehicle to explore the relationship between thought and movement. Backed by Houston musicians, cellist Max Dyer and multi-instrumentalist Conrado “Charry” Garcia, Waldman and Dunn will draw upon their improvisational abilities to deliver a truly original presentation.

Utilizing raw physicality during her readings, Waldman asserted herself as a prominent voice among post-Beat Generation poets. During the late 1960s, she ran the St. Mark's Church Poetry Project, a New York City headquarters for the leading poets of the time. Later, she and fellow poet Allen Ginsberg founded the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Boulder, Colo. Waldman has authored several books including “Vow To Poetry: Essays, Interviews & Manifestos” and toured with Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975.

Since the 1970s, the New York-based Dunn has choreographed performances for a host of international ballet and modern dance companies including the Paris Opera Ballet. He has also lent his talents to numerous collaborative projects working alongside filmmakers, composers and artists. Dunn is the artistic director of Douglas Dunn & Dancers.
