RISING STARS READY TO SHINE DURING ALBEE
NEW PLAYWRIGHTS WORKSHOP AT UH
The stage is set for six playwrights to premiere their works during
the University of Houston’s 2006 Edward Albee New Playwrights
Workshop.
Since 1989, this annual event has spotlighted plays written by
student playwrights and produced during the spring semester. All
of the featured works were groomed under the watchful eye of UH
Distinguished Lecturer and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lanford
Wilson.
“Working with students on this year’s plays has gone
very smoothly,” Wilson said. “These productions are
all in very good shape and the actors are well cast in their roles.
I am very pleased with the students’ progress.”
All performances are free and open to the public. Each play is
approximately one hour in length and will be performed in the following
order.
7:30 p.m., April 25, 27; 8 p.m., April 29
- “Phoenix” by Lou Amyx: A tale in
which love interrupts life rather than vice versa.
- “Happy Hour” by Joe Barnes: Four
women struggle for respect in a society where dignity is
hard to come by.
- “Texas Exodus” by Judith Switek:
A look at the outrageous love affair between a modern day
Bonnie and Clyde.
7:30 p.m., April 26; 8 p.m., April 28 and 3 p.m. April 30
- “15 Hours in a Green World” by Chris
Rivera: A group of people find new freedom while trapped in
a New Mexico bed and breakfast during a storm.
- “Secret Place” by Daryl Banner:
A young man moves in with his brother and waits for the return
of his lover.
