PERSONALIZED MEDICINE, FUTURE OF PHARMACEUTICALS
EXPLORED IN UH LECTURE
Amalia M. Issa Headlines Fourth Presentation in “Today’s
Health” Series April 19
With the potential for reducing or eliminating side effects and
improving a patient’s recovery, personalized medicine –
tailor-made medications based on an individual’s genetic information
– is revolutionizing the field of drug discovery and development.
Amalia M. Issa, a pharmacologist and clinical epidemiologist, will
give a lecture titled “Personalized Medicine and the Future
of the Pharmaceutical Industry” at the University of Houston
from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 19 in Room 130 of Science
& Research Building Two. The event is free and open to the public
and scientific community.
Issa is the director of the Program in Personalized Medicine and
Targeted Therapeutics at the Abramson Family Center for the Future
of Health, a joint initiative between UH and The Methodist Hospital
Research Institute. She is also an associate professor in UH’s
College of Technology. Her primary interests are in how basic and
clinical pharmaceutical sciences are translated into clinical research
and practice, as well as health policy.
In addition to discussing how personalized medicine seeks to develop
drugs that are customized for an individual patient’s particular
condition and side-effects profile, Issa will address the shifting
terrain of drug discovery and development, the evolving process
required for innovative pharmaceuticals, and key challenges and
issues facing scientists and the pharmaceutical industry.
This is the fourth in a series of lectures called “Today’s
Health” – sponsored by the UH Libraries and UH College
of Pharmacy – that showcases speakers who focus on the vital
role of pharmacists in health care delivery. The concept behind
“Today’s Health” is to spotlight prominent area
health professionals who possess valuable, real-world knowledge
and can address topics relevant to pharmacy students, as well as
being readily understood by a general audience.
The Abramson Family Center is dedicated to accomplishing the research,
prescribing the action and training the people who provide Houston
and its surrounding areas with the finest health care available
in the world. Its Program in Personalized Medicine and Targeted
Therapeutics seeks to promote informed decision-making about the
effectiveness of pharmaceutical products, services and policies.
