ART CARS, AMATEUR ORCHESTRA HIGHLIGHT
CONCERT FOR UH’S MITCHELL CENTER
Houston’s famous Art Cars will rev up the audience, and an
orchestra of volunteers will drive home an epic musical homage to
the atomic age. The University of Houston’s upcoming evening
of contemporary works by composer Stephen Montague will definitely
be one to remember.
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at UH presents guest
artist Montague teaming with the University’s Moores School
of Music and Dance Program for a unique concert on Friday, April
7.
At 7 p.m. in UH’s Arts Quadrangle, the music begins with
a performance of Montague’s “Horn Concerto for an Orchestra
of Automobiles.” This portion of the evening is presented
in collaboration with the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and
will feature a dazzling selection of Houston’s Art Cars, as
well as celebrity guest soloists, The Art Guys. This piece is performed
entirely on car horns, and the public is encouraged to arrive early
and gather in the courtyard.
At 7:30 p.m., the music moves into the Moores Opera House for “Dark
Sun,” a concert featuring selections of Montague’s repertoire
performed by UH’s AURA Contemporary Ensemble, Dance Program,
Percussion Ensemble and an assembly of musicians of all skill levels.
This amateur orchestra will factor heavily into the concert’s
title composition, which is a memoriam to those affected by the
atomic blast in the city of Hiroshima.
“The community can not only see the interaction of the arts
on stage, but during this event, they’ll also be able to participate,”
said Rob Smith, director of AURA.
The outdoor performance of “Horn Concerto” is free.
Tickets for “Dark Sun” are $15 and $10 for students
and seniors. For ticket reservations, call 713-743-3313.
