‘PEOPLE’S LAW SCHOOL’
AT UH OFFERS
FREE LEGAL SEMINARS TO HOUSTONIANS
If you’re looking for a source for free information about
your legal rights, the best place to get it is the “People’s
Law School” offered April 8 by the Center for Consumer Law
at the University of Houston Law Center.
The People’s Law School is the nation’s oldest and
most successful program for “average citizens” with
questions about the law. The program is co-sponsored by the Houston
Bar Association and will feature free courses in fourteen different
areas of law: business law, bankruptcy, employment, insurance, consumer
law, credit and debt collection, wills and estates, family law,
health insurance law, landlord tenant law, small claims court, how
to deal with an attorney, how to research the law on the Internet,
and a new course on juvenile law.
Leading the classes will be more than 40 volunteer lawyers, judges,
and law professors. Each “student” may choose three
classes to attend, and written materials will be available for each
class. There will even be free donuts – courtesy of Kroger’s.
While the “People’s Law School” is free, pre-registration
is required and limited to the first 1,000 people. To register by
mail, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Professor Richard
M. Alderman, University of Houston Law Center, 100 Law Center, Houston,
Texas 77204-6060. To register on the web, go to www.peopleslawyer.net.
“Our classes won’t turn you into a lawyer, but they
can help you settle disputes and avoid problems,” Alderman
said. “Best of all, it’s all free – even the donuts.”
