MUSICIANS OF ALL SKILL LEVELS NEEDED FOR
UH’S ‘DARK SUN’ CONCERT
It doesn’t matter whether someone was an alternate in their
high school marching band or a gifted performer who hasn’t
touched an instrument in a while. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center
for Arts at the University of Houston is looking for musicians of
all skill levels to round out a community orchestra to perform in
the “Dark Sun” concert at 7:30 p.m. April 7 in the Moores
Opera House.
The “Dark Sun” concert will feature compositions by
Mitchell Center guest artist Stephen Montague. The recruited musicians
will perform on the concert’s title piece, which is a memoriam
to the victims and survivors of the atomic blast that struck Hiroshima.
Interested musicians should contact Rob Smith, director of UH’s
AURA Contemporary Ensemble, at 713-743-3163 or e-mail him at robsmith@uh.edu
to reserve a spot in the orchestra. Reservations are being taken
through Monday, April 3. All participants must have their own instruments
and must participate in two rehearsals prior to the concert. The
rehearsals are scheduled for 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 and
3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 7 in the Moores Opera House.
The instruments requested for this performance are flutes, piccolos,
oboes, clarinets, saxophones, bassoons, horns, trumpets, trombones,
tubas, percussion, strings and voices. Non-instrumentalists are
welcome to sing in the choir or perform on percussion. Musicians
must be at least 12 years old.
