‘CHÉRUBIN’ ARRIVES
AT UH TO CHARM HOUSTON OPERA AUDIENCES FOR FIRST TIME
Opera enthusiasts will never forget the amorous boy, Chérubino,
from “The Marriage of Figaro.” Thanks to the University
of Houston’s Edythe Bates Old Moores Opera Center, audiences
can see what became of the lusty lad in the Houston premiere of
Jules Massenet’s “Chérubin.”
The opera debuts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, in Moores Opera
House. It is open to the public.
The high energy production follows the lovable title character
as he seduces a countess, a dancer, a baroness and a peasant. The
comic misadventures of this eternal romantic will keep audiences
guessing as to who will end up with his heart.
“Everyone identifies with him,” said Buck Ross, director
of the Moores Opera Center. “He is astonishingly charming
as he doesn't censor his feelings and approaches the world with
wide-eyed delight and wonder.”
In keeping with the tradition of this production, Chérubin
will be played by a mezzo-soprano. The libretto will be sung in
its original French with English surtitles.
Massenet debuted “Chérubin” on Valentine’s
Day 1905 in Monte Carlo. Since then, it has remained a favorite
on the opera circuit, but has rarely been performed in the United
States.
“We’re pleased to bring this opera to Houston for the
first time,” Ross said. “‘Chérubin’
is a very audience friendly work with fantastic singing, spectacular
dancing, exciting duels and a romantic balcony scene. It’s
a perfect fit for anyone who appreciates opera, as well as for our
talented vocalists.”
