GET THE FAT OUT: NUTRITION AND OBESITY
EXPERTS GATHER AT UH SYMPOSIUM
Nutrition, exercise and weight management experts will debate problems
and solutions related to obesity at a symposium 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
Monday, April 3, at the University of Houston Rockwell Pavilion
in the M. D. Anderson Library.
The event is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by the UH Department of Health and Human Performance,
the symposium features a discussion with John Foreyt, an internationally
recognized expert on weight management and obesity. Dr. Foreyt is
a researcher at Baylor College of Medicine and collaborates with
UH researchers on many obesity studies, most recently the five-year
TIGER study. TIGER (Training Intervention Genetics of Exercise Response)
follows UH students and staff through exercise programs and examines
them for genetic reasons that explain their accompanying weight
loss or gain.
Other speakers include Rod Dishman, one of the founders of the
International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Academy of Sports
Science, who will discuss the Motivation to Move; UH’s Rebecca
Lee and Norma Olvera, who research environmental and cultural reasons
for obesity; UH’s Shreela Sharma, whose studies examine childhood
obesity issues; and UH’s Andrew Jackson, who will discuss
the TIGER study.
“The obesity epidemic carries with it a price tag that extends
into the millions of dollars for health care, lost work and low
quality of life,” said Charles Layne, HHP professor and chair
of the department. “Obesity has grown into the number one
health care issue in America. We are particularly honored to host
Dr. Foreyt and Dr. Dishman, who are on the leading edge of breakthrough
information in the field of obesity studies.”
