MARY GORDON, PATRICIA POWELL FEATURED
DURING BROWN READING SERIES

Mary Gordon and Patricia Powell will read from their works as part of the 25th anniversary season of the Inprint Brown Reading Series, Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

The reading, originally scheduled for Sep. 16 with authors Gordon and Caryl Phillips, was cancelled because of the threat of Hurricane Rita. Phillips was unable to accommodate the rescheduled date, so Powell will read in his place.

Gordon is the author of seven novels, including “Final Payments,” “The Company of Women,” “Men and Angels,” and the memoir “The Shadow Man.” She has received the Lila Acheson Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writer’s Award and a Guggenheim fellowship, and is currently a professor of English at Barnard College. The Los Angeles Times has praised her book, “The Shadow Man,” saying, “[Gordon] is truly brilliant and fearless in her ability to look, even when her eyes burn, and her heart breaks.” And the New York Times Book Review described the book as “passionate and extravagant. . . the reader. . . must testify to the dominance of such absolute literary power.”

Powell, a native of Jamaica, has written three novels, “Me Dying Trial,” “A Small Gathering of Bones” and “The Pagoda.” Kirkus Reviews called “The Pagoda” a luminously rendered novel, and the Boston Sunday Globe described it as “astonishing [with] an intricate, intimate, constantly surprising plot… Powell is a novelist of great talent.” She has won several awards, including the PEN New England Discovery Award and the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writers’ Award. She currently serves as a visiting writer for the University of Houston Creative Writing Program.

Doors open to the public at 6:45 p.m., and the reading begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $5, and the event is free for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available only at the door the night of the reading. Seating is limited; no late seating is available.

Inprint is a nonprofit organization that brings the world’s leading writers to Houston through the Brown Reading Series, which is presented in association with the UH Creative Writing Program, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Brazos Bookstore. The remaining writers for the series include Julian Barnes, John Updike, Louise Glück and Franz Wright.
