The University of Houston’s School of Art and Blaffer Gallery are ready to offer the city’s art enthusiasts an early holiday gift as they unveil a collection of new works from a group of dynamic student artists. The 2005 School of Art Annual Student Exhibition will offer the community a glance at emerging artists who are honing their talents at UH. Hosted by Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, the exhibition will open at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, with a reception that is free and open to the public. Works displayed will include paintings, sculpture, graphic communications, photography, jewelry and interior design. All of the exhibition pieces were selected by faculty members and installed in the gallery by Blaffer’s expert staff. “Blaffer Gallery has always showcased new and vibrant artists, and each year, we look across the courtyard to our friends in the School of Art for a fresh batch of talent,” said Terrie Sultan, director of Blaffer Gallery. “This is a rare opportunity for these students to show their works in a professional gallery, and we’re pleased to host them.” In addition to the Dec. 2 reception, the School of Art is hosting a studio open house next to Blaffer. Patrons can visit its various art studios to view more art and to observe the artists’ actual workspaces. “Visiting our studios is a benefit for serious art patrons,” said Jack Hanna, associate professor of interior design. “Seeing where these students spend hours working on projects offers insight into the creative atmosphere that the school provides.” Patrons have the opportunity to purchase works from students.
