REUNION OF ’60s ACTIVISTS SPARKS FIREWORKS
IN LANFORD WILSON’S ‘FIFTH OF JULY’ AT UH

A reunion of former student activists ignites emotional fireworks on the Fourth of July, but the loudest pops won’t be heard until the next day.

“Fifth of July” peers into the lost hopes and unhealed wounds of ’60s survivors. Written by award-winning dramatist and University of Houston distinguished theater lecturer Lanford Wilson, the play takes the stage at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in UH’s Wortham Theatre.

Although the play was written in the 1970s, director Carolyn Houston Boone said that its themes still impact today’s audiences.

“One of the main characters is a teacher who was crippled during the Vietnam War. He says that his students don’t know where Vietnam is,” she said. “Some younger audiences might fit into that category, but there is enough said about the war’s effect on the characters to fill in the gaps for everyone.”

“Fifth of July” is the first play in Wilson’s “Talley family series,” which includes the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Talley’s Folly” (1980) and “Talley & Son” (1981).

Recruited by Distinguished Professor of Theatre and award-winning playwright Edward Albee, Wilson joined the UH School of Theatre faculty in 2003 and directs the annual Edward Albee New Playwrights Workshop.

“Working with students at UH gives me the chance to see the future of American theater,” Wilson said.

General admission tickets for “Fifth of July” are $15; $12 for UH faculty, staff and alumni; $10 for seniors or groups of 10 or more, and $7 for students. Ticket information can be obtained by calling the Wortham Theatre box office at (713) 743-2929.
