MARCHING BAND AT UH STEPS FROM FIELD TO
STAGE FOR CONCERT PERFORMANCE
The energy of a football game’s halftime show will be transferred
to the concert stage as the University of Houston’s Spirit
of Houston Marching Band will perform at Moores Opera House Friday,
Nov. 4.
For the second year in a row, the band will raise money for its
scholarship program with a unique benefit concert featuring all
of its entertainers including the Cougar twirlers, drumline, color
guard and dancers.
Inspired by the University of Michigan marching band’s annual
concert fundraiser, the Spirit of Houston takes its show into bold
new directions by incorporating more than just music into its stage
performance. Theatrical dancing, flag routines and baton feats add
variety to an already entertaining atmosphere, and portions of the
concert will be driven by audience participation.
“This show is all about having fun,” said David Bertman,
director of the Spirit of Houston. “It’s a rare chance
to experience the kind of performance that’s usually reserved
for a stadium inside a beautiful concert hall.”
The Spirit of Houston entertains fans locally and around the nation
during halftime at UH football games and at parades. This year,
it was the leading band in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
Parade; and in 2004, the band played alongside Janet Jackson during
the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show at Reliant Stadium.
“We’re always ready to represent UH,” Bertman
said. “Whether it’s a parade, concert or sporting event,
our purpose is to entertain and spread Cougar spirit. For those
who have never seen us perform, this concert is a perfect introduction
to the Spirit of Houston.”
Tickets for the concert are $10 for general admission and $20 for
reserved seating. For more information, call
