CHILDREN’S THEATRE FEST AT UH GETS
OFF TO COOL START WITH ‘SNOW WHITE’
Take one poison apple, add seven dwarves and one fair maiden, and
you have the recipe for a classic fairy tale. Throw in talents from
the University of Houston’s School of Theatre, and families
can watch this story simmer on stage during the first production
of the 2005 Children’s Theatre Festival (CTF).
Each year CTF attracts 25,500 children and families to its performances.
This year’s festival kicks off with “Snow White”
on May 31 in the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre. Other CTF plays
to be performed this summer are “Land of Broken Toys”
(June 21 – July 1) and “Peter and the Wolf” (July
16 – August 1).
When adapting classics such as “Snow White,” the creative
minds behind CTF add subtle twists to the familiar stories. This
time around, Snow White will encounter a pair of dopey bats –
one of whom is convinced he’s Batman.
In 1978 Sidney Berger, director of the School of Theatre, and Bren
Dubay founded the festival. Since its inception, CTF has commissioned
plays from the country’s top theater talents, including Broadway
legend Jerry Bock. CTF also hires professional casts and stage crews
to make each production a unique spectacle.
“Children’s theater is the art of storytelling revived,”
Berger said. “When children see these plays, they’re
inspired to read more and develop an appreciation for the theater.”
Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for children 14 and under. For
