SECRETARY OF EDUCATION MARGARET SPELLINGS AMONG NINE HONOREES
AT 47th ANNUAL HOUSTON ALUMNI ORGANIZATION AWARDS DINNER

One of the main architects of the “No Child Left Behind Act,” a world renowned physician who has led the fight against cancer and a prominent leader of the Houston business community are among those who will be honored at this year’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner presented by the Houston Alumni Organization (HAO).

The 47th awards dinner saluting University of Houston alumni and supporters will be held at 8 p.m., Friday, May 20, in the Legends Ballroom of the InterContinental Hotel, 2222 West Loop South. HAO will be honoring nine notable alumni and community leaders for their contributions to the university’s development.

Recipients of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Awards are the Honorable Margaret Spellings, U.S. secretary of education; Dr. Herman Suit, head of radiation oncology at the Harvard Medical School; Anastacio “Tatcho” Mindiola, the director of UH’s Center for Mexican American Studies; and noted Texas educator Patricia Potter Wilson.

The immediate past Chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership, Robert Mosbacher Jr., and Gasper Mir, the executive general manger for strategic operations of HISD, will be presented the Chair’s Awards.

This year, HAO has selected two recipients for its Distinguished Service Award: J. Downey Bridgwater, president and CEO of Sterling Bank; and Sharon Stinson, a longtime HAO and UH volunteer. The Outstanding Volunteer Award will be given to Sherman Smith, an examiner and auditor for the Texas Workforce Commission.

Founded in 1940, HAO represents more than 180,000 UH alumni and supports 34 college and department constituent associations and 11 geographically based area clubs. HAO provides a variety of programs, including career services, scholarships and faculty awards, community service projects, and alumni and student programs.
