'XYZ' SPELLS FAREWELL EXHIBITION FOR 2005
UH SENIOR DESIGNERS
Graduating seniors in the University of Houston School of Art’s
Graphic Communications program will soon go their separate ways
to pursue individual careers, but their talents will be united one
last time in an exhibition of their works.
“XYZ: UH Graphic Communications Senior Exhibition”
runs Thursday, May 12 – Tuesday, May 24 at the Cultural Arts
Council of Houston/Harris County’s Space 125 Gallery. It is
free and open to the public.
Every year, graphic communications seniors’ works are highlighted
in an exhibition. This year’s event will include books, posters
and even bus shelter designs that will be proposed to the Houston
Heights Association.
Packaging designs will also be showcased with pieces reflecting
different areas in Houston such as sugar labels promoting Sugar
Land.
For the past year, the students themselves coordinated and promoted
this show, an experience that offered lessons outside of the studio
and classroom.
“This exhibition was very much about teamwork,” said
Heather Cobb, senior and president of the 2005 Graphic Communications
Student Association. “In design agencies, we’ll work
in group settings, so it’s an excellent opportunity to learn
about working with peers toward a specific goal.”
In addition to teaching students how to organize a gallery show,
the event helps introduce them to Houston designers.
“This is a chance to celebrate our graduation,” Cobb
said. “It’s also an excellent opportunity to show the
quality of work coming out of UH to other designers and to the city
of Houston.”
