CAPS OFF: UH GRADUATION TIP SHEET

As graduation season approaches, many students will close the chapter on their formal schooling. It’s a time of reflection – on the obstacles they’ve overcome, the people who have helped them along the way and the goals they hope to accomplish. As you consider stories about commencement, please keep in mind these ideas from the University of Houston. For more information or to arrange interviews, give us a call at 713-743-8153.

Aiming High
He wanted to re-enlist into the U.S. Air Force. She told him that he couldn’t have all the fun. So together, Scott and Theresa Dunlap rearranged their lives just so they could be among UH’s first class of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) cadets. This spring, the Dunlaps will be commissioned as lieutenants. The AFROTC detachment at UH is the first and only program in the city.

One Couple, Two Years, Four Degrees
One year after emigrating from Turkey, Baris and his wife Zeynep Bildaci each enrolled in the master’s of business administration and the master’s of industrial engineering programs. They converted their home into a makeshift classroom with a white board, as they mapped out difficult concepts or processes. “After simultaneously working full-time and taking on two master’s programs, we feel like we can manage any project given to us,” Baris Bildaci said.

Looking at 50
The College of Optometry will honor its first graduating class, which received their degrees in 1955. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the college is the only one in the Southwest and one of 17 optometry schools in the United States. The more than 3,000 graduates of the college hail from 48 countries. Professor Charles Stewart, who served as dean from 1952-1961, has written the book “The Founding Years,” detailing the college’s beginnings. He will attend the college’s graduation and is available for interviews.

Power to the People
Author, TV host and activist Emme will deliver the commencement address for the Graduate School of Social Work 1 p.m., May 14, at the Cullen Performance Hall. She will discuss empowerment, ways to change the world and how to make a difference. Emme is host of “Fashion Emergency” on E! Entertainment Television and the Style network. She is also a full-figured supermodel.

It’s a Touchdown
Chelsea Yvette Moon, daughter of former Houston Oilers football star Warren Moon, will receive her bachelor’s degree in English during the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences commencement ceremony 9 a.m., May 13, at Hofheinz Pavilion. UH System Regent Lynden B. Rose, a family friend, hopes to congratulate Chelsea on stage.

Road Trip to Graduation
For the first time, students in the Corpus Christi area will graduate from the UH Graduate School of Social Work as part of its distance education program. Professors traveled on the weekends for lectures, and during the week they kept up with students via e-mail and phone. Upon graduation, two dozen students will work at Child Protective Services to help pay for their financial assistance they received. The program grew out of a call for help from Corpus Christi’s Child Protective Services.
