REMEMBERING BARTHELME: UH LIBRARY OFFERS
FIRST-EVER SHOWCASE
OF ACCLAIMED WRITER’S PAPERS
The late Donald Barthelme will be remembered as a master wordsmith
and as a University of Houston professor devoted to teaching the
craft of writing. His passion for language will be on display for
everyone to see in a special exhibit on the first floor of the newly
renovated M.D. Anderson Library.
“The Teachings of Don B.: Selections from the Donald Barthelme
Papers” can be viewed Monday, April 18 - Friday, September
2. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Barthelme’s innovative writings were a staple of The New
Yorker magazine from the 1960s through the 1980s. In 1979, he joined
UH’s Creative Writing program as a faculty member. He later
became its director until his death in 1989. Barthelme is best known
for his many collections of short stories including “Come
Back, Dr. Caligari” and “60 Stories,” which was
nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction.
“The Teachings of Don B.” will showcase Barthelme’s
work for The New Yorker through typescripts and correspondence with
editors. It will also feature letters from writing colleagues including
John Updike and Kurt Vonnegut and examples from his UH teaching
career such as class assignments and works from former students.
Family photos and examples of Barthelme’s collage stories
will also be displayed.
“Donald Barthelme’s stories were funny, experimental
and commented on the absurdity of modern life,” said Special
Collections Librarian and the exhibit’s curator Julie Grob.
“His papers have never been exhibited before, so Houston audiences
will have a unique opportunity to learn more about this renowned
writer.”
