‘LEVIATHAN’ SURFACES AS FIRST
STUDENT PROJECT OF
UH’S CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Working to inspire new forms of creativity and collaboration, the
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of
Houston launches its slate of student works with a unique undertaking
that incorporates the audience’s own thoughts and words into
the program.
“The Leviathan Project,” the first student production
from the center’s “Collaboration Among the Arts”
course, will be presented Saturday, April 23 in UH’s Fine
Arts Building. The event is free and open to the public.
“Leviathan” requires entering patrons to divulge specific
thoughts on a card. Each card will trigger certain actions within
the room such as a pianist who will develop music reflective of
what people have written. Visitors also will be guided to headphones
to hear a person’s “first kiss” tale and can read
selected literary quotes adorning the walls.
“The idea is to create a sense of something greater than
the individual and to make everyone aware of their commonalities,”
said Chris Olexy, graduate student in UH’s School of Art.
“By making this project dependent on audience participation,
we are making the piece collaborative with the audience.”
Olexy’s group also consists of students from UH’s Creative
Writing Program, Moores School of Music and School of Theatre and
is being overseen by Nick Flynn, assistant professor of English.
Funded by a $20 million grant from George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell,
the center is an alliance of UH’s Blaffer Gallery, the Creative
Writing Program and the schools of art, music and theatre. Its first
course, “Collaboration,” began this spring with assistance
from visiting artists Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen. Three other
student projects will be presented in May.
