ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERNATIONAL LAW
David W. Leebron, president of Rice University, will visit the
University of Houston at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, to deliver
a lecture titled “From Trade to Torture: Why International
Law Matters.”
He will be presenting the UH Law Center’s Fourth Annual Houston
Journal of International Law lecture. The event is free and open
to the public, but those interested in attending are asked to RSVP

In his talk, Leebron will discuss international law regimes in
the context of both trade and human rights, and will explore interpretative
approaches to America’s obligations under international law.
He will discuss examples such as the White House Office of Legal
Counsel’s treatment of the Geneva Conventions in the so-called
“Torture Memos,” and President Bush’s rescinding
of steel sanctions in response to an adverse ruling from the World
Trade Organization. He will also examine the growing prominence
of international and comparative law in the U.S. Supreme Court’s
jurisprudence.
Leebron, who was appointed the seventh president of Rice University
last year, graduated summa cum laude from Harvard in 1976. At Harvard
Law School, he was elected president of the Harvard Law Review in
his second year and graduated magna cum laude in 1979. In 1989,
he joined the faculty of Columbia University School of Law. In 1996,
he was appointed dean.
He is the author of a textbook on international human rights, and
has written numerous articles on issues of international trade,
corporate finance and human rights.
