FASHION FORUM AT UH CONNECTS STUDENTS WITH INDUSTRY LEADERS

As style trends come and go, so do the marketing strategies of clothing and cosmetic retailers. High school and college students interested in learning more about this ever-changing industry will have a rare chance to talk shop with some of its leaders during the University of Houston’s Retail Fashion Forum 2005.

Titled “Movers, Shakers and Makers,” the forum kicks off at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, in Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture’s theater (Room 150) and atrium. The event is sponsored by the UH College of Technology’s Human Development and Consumer Science Department.

Scheduled panel speakers are Roz Pactor, vice president and fashion director of Foley’s; Chuck McGee, district manager of Target; Christine Holland, senior vice president/general merchandise manager of Ladies Sportswear; and Houston-based husband and wife entrepreneurs Magda Sayeg and Dan Fergus, who own the local boutique Raye and café Brasil.

In addition to a panel discussion, students can meet retail sponsors to discuss industry trends and career opportunities.

“Students will get a better understanding of what it takes to be successful in different kinds of retail industries,” said Shirley Ezell, associate professor of human development and consumer science. “They’ll also have a chance to learn about job opportunities, submit resumes and find out what qualifications executive training programs look for in candidates.”

In addition to UH students, students from local community colleges are expected to attend this event, as well as students from Houston, Alief and Spring Independent School Districts.
