TERRY ALLEN’S ‘DUGOUT’
SLIDES INTO UH’S MITCHELL CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Terry Allen is an artistic jack-of-all-trades. Soon the dramatist,
artist, singer and songwriter will add another title to his extensive
resume – visiting artist at the University of Houston’s
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.
Allen will work with students participating in the center’s
collaborative arts curriculum and will bring his multi-media “DUGOUT”
exhibit and performance to campus.
At 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, UH’s Blaffer Gallery will host
a reception to kick off Allen’s “Stories from DUGOUT.”
The multi-media exhibit will be on display in the gallery through
June 11. The companion performance, “DUGOUT III: Warboy (and
the backboard blues),” will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, April
29, in the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre. Both events are free
and open to the public. Performance reservations can be made by
calling (713) 743-2929.
“Stories from DUGOUT” collects drawings, sculptures
and mixed media art from the first two installments in Allen’s
“DUGOUT” series, which tells the story of a Texas minor
league baseball player who woos a Midwest lounge singer. The tale
is loosely based on Allen’s parents in Lubbock, Texas. “DUGOUT
III” continues the tale with a performance starring Allen’s
wife and fellow visiting artist, Jo Harvey Allen.
The Mitchell Center was funded by a $20 million grant from George
and Cynthia Woods Mitchell and combines the energies of UH’s
Blaffer Gallery, School of Theatre, School of Art, Creative Writing
Program and Moores School of Music.
