STUDENT ARTISTS GET PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT
DURING UH’S MASTERS THESIS EXHIBIT
For the better part of a year, graduate students in the University
of Houston’s School of Art have labored over their final projects.
Soon, their hard work will be on display for art aficionados to
enjoy during the 2005 School of Art Masters Thesis Exhibition.
A collection of 13 graduate students’ sculptures, paintings,
interior design works and graphic communication pieces will be on
display at UH’s Blaffer Gallery starting Saturday, March 19.
A free public reception celebrating the exhibit will be held at
7 p.m. on Friday, March 25.
While other art institutions host student exhibitions, UH’s
School of Art offers graduate students the opportunity to have their
work prominently displayed in a professional gallery. Likewise,
it teaches them about the processes involved with exhibiting, including
submitting artists’ statements for an exhibition catalog and
consulting with the gallery’s staff regarding installation
requirements.
“Students are able to experience participating in a museum
exhibition. Many artists do not get a chance like this until much
later in their careers,” said Cathy Hunt, graduate adviser
for UH’s School of Art. “Most importantly, they are
able to show their best work to both patrons and critics. It’s
a perfect mix of experience and exposure.”
