NOTED AFRICANA STUDIES PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS
MALCOLM X AND ISLAM FOR UH AFRICANA LECTURE SERIES
Noted Africana Studies professor and historian Akbar Muhammad will
speak at the University of Houston as part of the African American
Studies Program’s, “Africana Lecture Series.”
Muhammad will discuss “Malcolm X: The International Muslim”
at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17 in Agnes Arnold Hall, room 628.
Muhammad is associate professor of Africana Studies and history
at State University of New York at Binghamton where he teaches courses
on African history and Islam. His talk will address Malcolm X’s
significance to Islam worldwide.
Muhammad is the youngest son of Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad
and was a close friend of Malcolm X.
As a scholar, Muhammad has written several articles on the topic
of Islam and African history including, “Muslims in the United
States: An Overview of Organizations, Doctrines and Problems,”
“Islam and National Integration Through Education in Nigeria,”
and “The Image of Africans in Arabic Literature.” He
is also the author of the book “Racism, Sexism and the World
System.”
The lecture series is one of several events AAS has planned for
Black History Month. The event is free and open to the public.
