ROARING ’20S OFFERS NEW SETTING FOR UH PRODUCTION
OF BARD’S CLASSIC ‘MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

Flappers, vaudeville and jazz aren’t what theater-goers expect in a Shakespeare comedy, but the UH School of Theatre is putting an unexpected twist on one of the Bard’s classics.

The school’s upcoming production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” transports the timeless comedy into the Roaring ’20s and into a forest setting unlike anything Shakespeare ever imagined. The play kicks off a five-show run at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, in UH’s Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre.

“Everything’s white,” said the play’s director, Carolyn Houston Boone, associate professor of acting and directing. “The play is set in a forest, but ours has absolutely no color and contains flat, interwoven depictions of flowers and leaves. It’s all very Art Deco-inspired.”

While the original play featured fairies and lovers in a romantic fantasy farce, this update delivers tango dancers, flappers, vaudevillians and Asian artists. Underscoring these characters and emphasizing the 1920s setting are jazz and blues numbers.

“This 1920s setting accentuates the comedic aspects of this play,” Boone said. “It’s very action-packed with dancing. Plus, the unique stage set-up allows the cast plenty of room to run, jump and energize Shakespeare’s story.”

General admission tickets are $15; $12 for UH faculty, staff and alumni; $10 for seniors or groups of 10 or more, and $7 for students. Ticket information can be obtained by calling the Wortham Theatre box office at (713) 743-2929.
