DELPHIANS HONOR UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON’S
SUSIE GOGUE AT 48th ANNUAL GALA
Organization Recognizes Her Continuing Support of Education
HOUSTON, Jan. 31 – The Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters
will honor Susie Gogue, the wife of University of Houston System
Chancellor and UH President Jay Gogue. Mrs. Gogue will be recognized
at the 48th annual gala Feb. 5 at the Sheraton Houston Brookhollow
Hotel. The honor is given annually to an individual associated with
UH.
“We choose people who care about UH because we care about
UH and education,” Margaret Bock, former assembly president,
trustee of the Delphian Scholarship Foundation Fund, and liaison
to UH said. “The Delphians are a group of very caring ladies,
and we have worked for years to give scholarships and departmental
gifts to UH.”
“I am delighted to be recognized by an organization with such
a long, impressive record of educational support,” Mrs. Gogue
said.
Founded in Houston in 1924, the Delphian organization is one of
the oldest women’s clubs in the city. The chapters meet for
discussion seminars twice a month to exchange opinions and share
knowledge and to host many events to fund scholarships to undergraduate
UH students.
Mrs. Gogue is very active in the Houston community. She is a member
of the board of directors of the Houston Grand Opera, as well as
the Foundation Board of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the UT Health Science
Center School of Nursing Partners Board and the Salvation Army Women’s
Auxiliary.
“We reach out to the community through different ways like
the silent auction and garage sales so we can fund these scholarships,”
Gail Clark, Delphian gala program chair said.
Since the first scholarship given in 1930, more than $1 million
has been disbursed through more than 600 scholarships continuously
throughout the years to benefit UH students. Currently, 15 UH students
hold a Delphian scholarship in the amount of $2,000 per semester
for as long as needed.
This year’s gala includes a night of dinner, dancing, a silent
auction, prize drawing, a short program and live music by the Ed
Gerlach Band. Delphian members and special invited guests will attend.
Previous honorees include Arthur K. Smith, former UH System chancellor
and UH president; Max Castillo, UH-Downtown president; and David
Ashley White, director of the UH Moores School of Music. The Delphians
have recently contributed endowments for the Houston Shakespeare
Festival and the UH Children’s Theatre Festival in addition
to pledging a reading room for the new library construction, and
practice room for the music school, said Bock.
