FAIRY TALE MOCK TRIAL, LEGAL ACTIVITIES MIX
LAUGHTER AND THE LAW AT UH’S ‘CAMP C.O.O.L.’ FOR KIDS

Houston-area elementary school children have a chance to learn about the law and have fun doing it during a two-day camp presented at the University of Houston Law Center Nov. 22-23.

Sound cool? It is – Camp C.O.O.L. to be specific: Children’s Orientation On Law.

During the camp, which is cosponsored by the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, children will get to see popular fairy tale characters stand trial. Like Joey Wolfcryer, who’s charged with crying wolf where there is no wolf – a direct violation of safety ordinances in the Village of Sheepfold.

Registration for the camp is $5. The fee includes activities, snacks, a T-shirt and lunch for both days.

“Camp C.O.O.L. day camp offers campers the opportunity to be involved in entertaining (and educational)
law-related activities,” Wendy Miller, Camp C.O.O.L. chair, said.

On Nov. 22,

    • 5th and 6th graders will participate in a junior judges program and make crafts with PAD members.
    • 3rd and 4th graders will engage in a creative writing activity called “How to be a Law School Journal Editor.”
    • Kindergarten to 2nd graders will take part in a “law is fun” activity and make arts and crafts.
    • All campers will conclude the day with a class on personal/gun safety and peer pressure.

On Nov. 23,

    • 5th and 6th graders will participate in a mock law class on Children’s Rights. In a trial setting, the “Village of Sheepfold v. Joey Wolfcryer” case will be featured onstage in UH Law’s Krost Auditorium at 2:25 p.m. Students will follow the events of this trial, learn how a criminal case is tried in a court of law and then join the jury in deciding the guilt or innocence of the boy who cried wolf. The mock trial is open to the public.
    • There will be a bicycle safety class for K-4th graders.

For registration and more information, contact Wendy Miller at wmmiller@central.uh.edu or the Law Center Student Services at 713-743-2182.
