OLDEST ETHNIC FESTIVAL IN HOUSTON CELEBRATES
SLAVIC CULTURE
WITH FOOD, EXHIBITS, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT UH
The 41st Slavic Heritage Festival, the city’s oldest ethnic
festival, will fill the University of Houston’s campus with
traditional music, dance and culinary delights Nov. 13-14.
Sponsored by the University of Houston’s Lone Star Croatian
Club, the festival spotlights the heritage of Croatian and other
Slavic cultures.
The celebration kicks off with a folk concert by the ensemble,
Filip Devic, a group of 40 singers, musicians and dancers directly
from Split, Croatia. The group performs at the Houston Room in the
University Center Saturday, Nov. 13, 7 – 9 p.m. Presale admission
is $15, $20 at the door. UH faculty, students and staff can purchase
presale tickets for $10, $15 at the door.
The weekend continues with festival attendees treated to foods
and exhibits from Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian communities of greater
Houston. The fun takes place from noon-6 p.m., Nov. 14, in the Houston
Room at the University Center. Participants will have a chance to
win a seven-day trip for two to Croatia’s Adriatic coast (airfare
and hotel costs included), and other prizes. General admission is
$5 and $3 for UH faculty, students and staff. Children under 12
are admitted free.
“We hope to inform the greater Houston area of the Slavic
heritage through food and entertainment in a
family-oriented atmosphere,” said Mario Segvic, president
of the Lone Star Croatian Club. “We hope to make the festival
a UH tradition and to hold future festivals on campus.”
Founded in 1984, the Lone Star Croatian Club is a non-profit organization
that honors Croatian cultural heritage and promotes a better understanding
of Croatian history, tradition and culture.
