FORMER SEN. DALE BUMPERS DISCUSSES ILLUSTRIOUS
CAREER
DURING FREE UH LAW CENTER LECTURE
Dale Bumpers, who served as U.S. Senator for Arkansas from 1975-1999,
will speak at the University of Houston Law Center at 11 a.m., Tuesday,
Oct. 5.
The event, to be held in Krost Hall Auditorium at the UH Law Center,
is free and open to the public.
His presentation, “The Best Lawyer in a One-Lawyer Town,”
is based on the Random House autobiography published last year.
It chronicles his journey from an impoverished, Depression-era childhood
in Arkansas, where his father operated a combination hardware store
and funeral home, to a career as one of the nation’s most
prominent politicians. In large part, it focuses on Bumpers’
attempt to practice law in his small hometown, with “no office,
no library, no clients.”
In 1970, the Democrat ran for governor and, following that, was
elected to four consecutive terms in the U.S. Senate. Two weeks
after Bumpers left the Senate, then-President Bill Clinton called
him with an urgent plea to make the closing argument in his impeachment
trial. That speech is considered by many as a classic of political
oratory.
Bumpers’ appearance is the third annual John Mixon Society
lecture, an event held to honor that UH Law Center professor.
