University of Houston
The University of Houston, the nation’s most ethnically
diverse major research university, has served the city, the state,
and the nation for more than 75 years, first as a private institution,
and since 1963 as a public university. Located a few miles southeast
of downtown Houston, UH serves more than 34,400 students through
12 academic colleges and the multidisciplinary Honors College. Baccalaureate,
master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees are offered in
more than 200 fields. In 2002, the university conferred its 200,000th
degree, with upwards of 75 percent of alumni staying in Texas. Expenditures
for research and development increased nearly 60 percent since 1999
to more than $72 million in FY2002, the largest percentage increase
among Texas’ public research universities during the same
period.
The university has undergone major expansion in the past five years
with the opening of a new student apartment complex and an outstanding
wellness and recreation center. Construction is underway to expand
and renovate the M.D. Anderson Library and Honors College, and groundbreaking
for a new state-of-the-art science and engineering research and
classroom complex is scheduled to begin in late Fall 2003. Home
to the NCAA Division I Cougars, UH has garnered 17 NCAA national
championships and has produced more than 50 Olympic athletes and
coaches.

UH Houston Downtown
Since its founding in 1974, this urban university in the
heart of Houston’s central business district has more than
doubled the size of its student population, increased the number
of degree programs from one to nearly 40 (including two graduate
programs), renovated and expanded the campus, and received national
recognition for its student diversity and outstanding academic opportunities.
In Fall 2002, UHD enrolled 10,528 students. Max Castillo is the

UH Houston Clear Lake
UHCL is an upper-level university established in 1974 to
fill a vital niche in higher education for the region surrounding
NASA’s Johnson Space Center. UHCL’s extensive class
offerings and programs attract a student population evenly divided
between undergraduate and graduate students. The average age of
UHCL students is 32. Bachelor degree programs in more than 30 fields
of study are offered as well as master’s degrees in more than
40 fields of study. In the Fall 2002, UHCL enrolled 7,754 students.

UH Houston Victoria
Located in Victoria, Texas, about 100 miles southwest of
Houston, UHV was founded as an upper level institution in 1983 to
provide instruction to students in the Coastal Bend region. The
university offers degree programs in education, business administration,
and specified areas of the arts and sciences. In Fall 2002, UHV
enrolled 2,183 students. Karen S. Haynes is the president.
