Bich-May Nguyen, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, receives Diversity and Health Equity Leadership Award from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians

Bich-May Nguyen, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, a Houston-based physician, has been honored with the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) Diversity and Health Equity Leadership Award. The award was presented during TAFP’s Annual Session and Primary Care Summit in The Woodlands.

This prestigious recognition celebrates physicians who champion health equity, foster inclusivity in health care, and advocate for increased representation of historically underrepresented groups in medicine.

Nguyen’s impactful work includes leading a National Institutes of Health-funded initiative to boost COVID-19 vaccination rates and clinical trial participation within the Vietnamese American community. Collaborating with community-based organizations, her efforts have reached over 30,000 individuals directly and more than one million online with vaccine education.

In 2019, Nguyen served as guest editor for a special issue of the Family Medicine journal, focusing on racism in health care, published by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. She has also written extensively on topics such as affirmative action and the Black Lives Matter movement, further underscoring her commitment to advancing equity.

Currently, she is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences at the Fertitta College of Medicine. She also serves as the course director for Physicians, Patients, and Populations, a program designed to prepare diverse students for clinical educational experiences.

Family physicians, like Nguyen, are uniquely equipped to address a wide range of medical needs, providing care for patients of all ages and treating more than 90% of the conditions they encounter.

Nguyen’s dedication to improving health care access and equity reflects the core values celebrated by the TAFP Diversity and Health Equity Leadership Award.
