MASTER OF ARTS IN THEATRE STUDIES

The M.A. degree program in Theatre Studies at UH is recommended for individuals with a strong interest in the scholarly and dramaturgical aspects of theatre—particularly production dramaturgy, theatre history, new play development, and performance studies. The program is ideal for students interested in going on to pursue a Ph.D. or working as a professional dramaturg after graduation. A select number of students are admitted to the M.A. program each year, ensuring a high degree of individual contact with faculty.  As part of a unique professional partnership, M.A. Theatre Studies students are invited to serve as dramaturgs for multiple productions at the Alley Theatre, the largest regional theatre in the southwestern U.S.

Priority is given to applications received by February 15; however, applications continue to be accepted throughout the spring. The absolute deadline (if space is still available) is May 15 of the same year.

Admission Requirements:

  • UH application: Apply online through the University of Houston Graduate School
  • There is no GRE requirement for the M.A. in Theatre Studies
  • Program inquiries: Dr. Elizabeth Coen (emcoen@Central.UH.EDU)
