A Letter from TMF General and Artistic Director, Alan Austin
April 2, 2020
After careful consideration, and with the support of the Dean of the UH College of the Arts, the difficult decision has been made to cancel both the TMF 2020 Orchestral Institute (June 6-27) and the Institute of Voice Studies (May 20-June 5), due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
After 30 seasons, a summer with TMF seems unthinkable, but the health and safety of everyone involved remains our primary concern, as is a musical experience of the highest quality for our participants, conductors, faculty, and audiences. There are so many unknowns at this point (the timeline of the virus’s threat, everyone’s ability to travel to Houston, the availability of university housing and facilities in June, the ability to gather in larger groups in June, etc.), which affect both safety and the artistic experience, and it has become clear that cancellation is the only responsible decision. Rescheduling these institutes is not an option due complex faculty schedules.
Application fees for the Institute of Voice Studies and registration/housing fees for the Orchestral Institute will be refunded. In appreciation, all 2020 accepted applicants will be offered a substantially discounted application fee for the 2021 festival.
The dates and more information about TMF 2021 will be posted on our website soon. Help keep the music playing—check back to enjoy past recordings on our TMF Virtual Stage featuring performance by past TMF Orchestras, faculty and guest artists, and Young Artists (chamber music, voice and jazz institutes).
