Housing COVID-19 Update
12/14/2020, 10:00:02 AM

Dear Residents,

As the fall semester comes to and end and we approach winter break, we want to keep you informed about COVID-19 safety precautions and reinforce messages that have been distributed to the campus community.

As mentioned on the UH COVID-19 website, another surge in COVID-19 infections is underway throughout the United States. UH numbers have been relatively low, but that should not give us a false sense of security and mislead us into stopping our preventative measures during the holiday season. We urge you to stay vigilant in your efforts to prevent the spread. Wash your hands. Wear your masks. Keep your distance. Don’t go out if you’re ill. Get tested, if you have symptoms or have been exposed. Dr. Stephen Spann, UH Vice President for Medical Affairs, shared more tips about safety during the holidays in his Nov. 19 communication to the campus community.

Travel Guidelines

Students returning from international travel, university-sanctioned or personal, are required to complete one of the following upon returning to the United States:

  • Self-quarantine for 14 days OR

  • Get tested 3-5 days after travel AND stay home for 7 days after travel.

  • Even if you test negative, stay home for the full 7 days.

  • If your test is positive, stay home and follow the COVID-19 Diagnosis protocols.

These requirements for self-quarantine includes international students who are traveling to the U.S. for spring classes. Upon arriving in the U.S., please submit the Reporting Potential Exposure form. (Note that no forms are required to be completed in advance of your travel).

Before returning to campus following international travel, you must complete the form Request to Return to Campus and receive written approval.

You can view the travel guidelines here.

Reporting Forms for Residents

If you have tested positive, been diagnosed with COVID-19, or exhibit any Coronavirus Symptoms you should notify the Desk Assistant, Resident Advisor, or Residence Life Coordinator in your residence hall via phone call or text regarding options available for self-quarantine or self-isolation.  Additionally, you will need to complete the appropriate campus notification form:

  • If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 or receive a positive test result, complete the  Reporting COVID-19 Diagnosis form

  • Per the UH website residents who are symptomatic but have not tested positive for, or been diagnosed with, COVID-19 must contact their health provider or go to the Student Health Center for diagnosis, treatment and/or COVID-19 testing. If you receive a positive diagnosis, complete the Reporting COVID-19 Diagnosis form

  • For residents who have potential exposure/confirmed exposure (ie. someone close to you has tested positive, or a contact tracer notifies you), complete the Reporting Potential Exposure form

COVID-19 Testing Resources

The Student Health Center will provide COVID-19 testing for students who become symptomatic or who, through contact tracing, have been identified as exposed to COVID-19 on the UH campus. Learn more about COVID-19 testing on campus. There are also several off-campus testing locations throughout Harris Country. You can find a testing center in your area on the Harris County Public Health website.
