Highlights
- In Fall 2001, the College officially began
its year-long celebration and recognition of the 60th anniversary
of the founding of the Cullen College of Engineering.
- The College honored its fifth member of the
Faculty to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering,
Dr. Fazle Hussain. This continues the tradition of excellence
in the College, which has seen nine of its faculty and alumni
join this illustrious group.
- The College received notification from the
Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board
for Engineering and Technology (ABET) that its undergraduate programs
in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering,
industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering would continue
as accredited programs under the ABET 2000 guidelines.
- PROMES (Program for Mastery in Engineering
Studies) celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2001, now serving
more than 500 students (almost 30% of the engineering undergraduate
student body).
- The Industrial Scholar Interns Program (ISIP)
completed its first year of successful operation, with more than
$1 million in funding available to support selected undergraduate
students who participate in the Program. The ISIP partnership
involves more than 15 companies and 100+ students, with an average
freshman SAT of 1310.
- Engineering-related research performed by
the Faculty reached an all-time high of $16 million, averaging
almost $190,000 per faculty member.
- In the $60 million competitive State ATP/ARP
research program, the College received $2.1 million in funds,
approximately 3.4% of the total pool.
- Led by the College, and in partnership with
Rice University and Texas Southern University, a new infrastructure
research initiative was launched with the City of Houston, in
excess of $2 million.
- In May 2001, the College graduated its first
bachelor's of computer engineering student.
- The Engineering Alumni Association, long
recognized as one of the strongest alumni groups on campus, was
awarded the outstanding alumni association Banner Year Award
for 2001, the highest honor given by the Houston Alumni Organization.
- In an effort to strengthen public awareness
of the College's programs, a new College Web site was launched
recently named an award-winning site by the Council for
Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
