Grant to Develop International Convention and Conference Management in Japan
A federal grant was received by the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel & Restaurant Management to develop curriculum in International Convention and Conference Management to be taught at Meio University in Okinawa, Japan. Dr. Je’Anna Abbott, Associate Professor and Dr. Agnes DeFranco, Interim Dean of the College submitted the proposal to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The partnership between the College and Meio University will cover a three-year span. During the first year, six (6) new courses in conference and convention management will be developed: Introduction to the Convention Industry, Convention and Catering Sales and Services, International Convention and Exposition Management, Conference Center and Convention Management, Negotiation Skills for International Convention Managers, and Technology for the International Convention Industry. These courses will be delivered traditionally and via distance education. Other activities will include two visits by College professors to Meio University, while three professors from Meio University will visit the College. In addition, three selected students from Meio University (one per year) will visit and study at the College for one semester. Student and faculty internships will also be developed within the United States.

Online Master's Program Offered
The Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management began offering its Master of Hospitality Management degree online in September 2000. The Online Program is specially designed for hotel, restaurant, tourism and hospitality industry executives and professionals who want to advance their careers and already have completed a bachelor’s degree. Upon admission to the master’s degree program the candidates will be able to complete their coursework completely online. Upon graduation from the program a Master’s of Hospitality Management degree will be awarded. The Online Program will have its first graduating student in May 2002.

Wine & Spirits Management Institute
The Wine & Spirits Management Institute opened its doors in 2001, under the direction of Dr. Glenn Cordua, as the first educational partnership of its kind with the wine and spirits industry. The pooling of industry resources exceeds $800,000 with adult beverage industry participants that include GuinnessUDV, Allied Domecq, Beringer, Brown-Forman, Future Brands, E&J Gallo Winery, Glazer’s Family of Companies, Mondavi and Spec’s.

The Institute will have an established curriculum to teach students how the industry operates and will provide them with a certificate in Commercial Beverage Management.
