Now that you are familiar with our new and exciting graphic image, we want to help make it work for you.

The following guidelines will help you use the logo and logotype in an appropriate and effective fashion on all your published materials, including brochures, newsletters, advertising and other printed pieces.

By following these guidelines, we will be able to achieve the best possible image for the University of Houston.

BROCHURES

No matter how you design your brochures, the UH signature must appear on the cover with sufficient prominence. Ideally, the logotype is centered at the top of the cover or cover page and the logo at the bottom (see Signature Usage and Staging). However, you may place the logo on the back cover.

NOTE: It is imperative that you follow typography guidelines for the signature.

The UH equal opportunity statement must appear in prominence on or in your brochure. Other statements may apply as well, and all official statements are listed in this manual, as is up-to-date profile information on the university.

For help on statements, call the Office of Affirmative Action at 743-8835.

NOTE: Prior to publishing student financial and billing information, contact the Office of Finance and Accounting, 743-5880, to ensure that the information is accurate and updated.

NEWSLETTERS

The interlocking UH logo should be placed either on the front or back cover of your newsletter. Likewise, the name University of Houston should appear on the cover, but not necessarily in the masthead nor in official logotype configuration.

NEWS RELEASES AND CALENDAR ITEMS

Unlike other publications, news releases and calendar items use letterhead specifically established to project a consistent image to the media. The Office of Public Affairs is the guardian of this stationery, and only those projects handled by Public Affairs are guaranteed to have the most consistent and effective format. For help with your publicity needs, call Public Affairs at 743-8150.

ADVERTISING

Advertising serves many purposes and reaches a variety of audiences. Here we are concerned only with advertising in print media.

Personnel ads must carry the interlocking UH logo and the UH equal opportunity statement, separate from the body text. All text should be formatted in the Times font.

All other kinds of ads should carry the interlocking UH logo at the very least. They may also carry the logotype, and certain statements might be required.

For camera-ready or electronic copies of the logo, see the logo slicks at the end of this section, or call the Office of Publications and Marketing Communications at 743-8170.

NOTE: Any advertising must be approved by the Office of Affirmative Action at 743-8835. Personnel ads must be approved by Human Resources at 743-5770. All other ads must also be approved by the Office of Publications and Marketing Communications at 743-8170 prior to their release.

The Office of Publications and Marketing Communications (743-8150) can help you produce effective ads that comply with the standards of excellence set forth in this manual.

SPECIAL APPLICATIONS

Certain printed pieces -- invitations, cards, programs, etc. -- do not lend themselves to effective presentation of the signature. Therefore, you are allowed more flexibility in producing these pieces. We trust, however, that you will bear in mind the image of the University of Houston and the mission of the Graphic Standards Manual. As always, the Office of Publications and Marketing Communications is here to help (743-8170). Additional assistance can be obtained from the Office of Special Events at 743-8160.

NOTE: Publications used as promotions for or invitations to special events must carry the Americans with Disabilities Act statement. Questions regarding proper ADA statement use should be directed to the Office of Affirmative Action at 743-8835.

BUSINESS REPLY MAILERS

Business reply mailers, both card and envelope, are regulated by the U.S. Postal Service. They must be the correct size and carry the appropriate bar codes and permit numbers. You must comply with these guidelines to avoid unnecessary postal charges or mailing delays.

The UH Printing Department (743-5900) has templates for both envelopes and cards. All you need to do is provide the text.

Questions regarding business reply should be referred to Postal Services at 743-5840.

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS

Our graphic standards also apply to all external communications -- signs, banners, posters, vehicles, plaques, awards, certificates, flags, forms, bumper stickers, parking stickers and anything else bearing the university's name or signature. All external applications of the UH signature must be approved to ensure compliance with the standards set forth in this manual.

Approvals can be obtained from the Office of Campus Communications at 743-8190.
