ON-CAMPUS HOUSING BEING EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE WINTER BREAK
Houston, May 10, 2017 – University of Houston’s on-campus residential communities will now remain open during winter break starting this upcoming academic year.
The change will have a positive impact on UH’s diverse residential population, but especially those who do not plan on returning home during the break for various reasons, including international students and those who need to continue their regular work routines.
Approximately 8,000 students live in Student Housing and Residential Life’s on-campus communities. Two of them – Bayou Oaks and Calhoun Lofts apartments, as well as Cambridge Oaks and Cullen Oaks – already remain open during the winter break. The others will now follow suit this coming winter, with the exception of the Quadrangle, which will be closed after the fall semester in preparation for the construction of a new residential community to be built in the same location. When the Quadrangle replacement community opens in the fall of 2019, it also will remain open during the winter break.
Don Yackley, executive director of Student Housing and Residential Life, said the ground-breaking decision was made with the best interest of students in mind.
“This is the right thing to do for our students, many of whom have limited alternatives for housing between the fall and spring semesters,” he said. “By removing this burden off their shoulders, we are giving them an even clearer path toward a successful academic career at UH.”
