The University of Houston's Board of Regents on Wednesday approved a $20 million budget to build a basketball practice facility for the men's and women's programs.
The funding for the facility, to be built adjacent to Hofheinz Pavilion, came from private funding, including $5 million in the last three weeks, the school said.
Construction is expected to begin in May and be completed in 12 to 18 months.
"Today the project really becomes a reality," said Mack Rhoades, UH's vice president for intercollegiate athletics.
The 50,000-square-foot practice facility will include 1½ courts apiece for the men's and women's basketball teams in addition to locker rooms, team lounges, academic/film rooms, coaching office suites, a nutrition center as well as sports medicine and sports performance areas.
