The Teach Forward Houston Fellows really showed their school spirit and commitment to the Houston community during their first term! The students spent many hours in the Undergraduate Studies Office decorating the suite for Homecoming. These future teachers are quite imaginative and the decorating skills they used will certainly come in handy when they set up their own classrooms.
One of the ways the fellows helped the surrounding community was by holding a food drive to provide the folks at Cuney Homes with a nice Thanksgiving. The food was collected during the month of November and donated to the Cuney Homes community two days before Thanksgiving holiday. They were very appreciative of the students’ efforts and thoughtfulness.
Another idea the fellows proposed to give back to the community was to have a toy drive for the Christmas holiday. Teach Forward Houston students organized and participated in the Houston Fire Department’s Operation Stocking Stuffer. Quite a lot of toys were collected and donated to Houston Fire Station 25 at 3902 Scott St. in the Greater Third Ward. The firefighters were excited to receive such a large donation and said it was the largest single donation they had received!
In addition to donating the toys, the Houston Fire Department also asked volunteers to participate in the great toy giveaway on December 21st. Three Teach Forward Houston Fellows, Naidelyn Vazquez, Fabiola Hernandez, and Daniela Valadez all volunteered their time to pass out toys to the hundreds of children who received toys.
Thank you Teach Forward Houston Fellows for your thoughtfulness, generosity and commitment to the university and surrounding community. You make us Cougar Proud!
