Teacher Education Student Meghan Galvan Serves as a Leader to Fellow Students

Meghan GalvanMeghan Galvan, a student in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction’s (CUIN) Teacher Education program, feels that serving as a leader and properly representing the students of the College of Education (COE) is important to the college’s success. Currently, Galvan serves as the college’s Student Government Association (SGA) representative in the University of Houston (UH) Student Government Association’s 52nd Administration.

“SGA provides a voice to students to impact the university.  This is important because they are ultimately who we strive to serve,” said Andrea Burridge, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies. “We are so thankful for Meghan’s commitment to represent the college.”

Galvan became interested in UH’s student government because she wanted a way to serve not just the College, but the university. "This organization gave me that opportunity along with allowing me to meet new people and help my college along the way,” said Galvan.

SGA Mission

The Student Government Association exists to serve as the official voice through which student opinion may be expressed and empowered in the overall policy, decision making process, and services offered at the University of Houston. As such, the Student Government Association is committed to understanding the needs of students and advocating on their behalf. Through continuous interaction with students, faculty, staff, and administration, the organization works to improve and enhance the quality of the student experience.

The SGA is made up of three branches: the Executive Branch which is vested in the Student Body President, the Legislative Branch which is vested in the Student Senate, and the Judicial Branch which is vested in the Court of Appeals.

This year’s SGA initiatives include:

  • Health and Wellness
  • Accessibility and Relevance
  • Student Life Enrichment
  • Student Success
  • Safety and Security
  • Community Outreach and Involvement
  • Civic Engagement

When asked what she has learned in her time as a SGA Representative, Galvan stated, “the main thing that I have learned through this experience, is that people actually care about what the students want. Almost everything that I have suggested, such as a stress free finals event, has been acknowledged and acted upon.”

As the SGA’s 52nd Administration comes to an end, COE will have a vacancy to be filled in the Student Senate. For more information on how you can represent the COE in the Student Government Association, visit http://www.uh.edu/sga/.
