PHLS Alum Kennetha Frye Makes Her Dreams Come True at HISD

Kennetha FryeSchool Psychology Ph.D. alum Kennetha Frye has been unwavering in her desire to be a psychologist since she was a child. After graduating from the UH College of Education, she is making her dream come true as a School Psychologist for the Houston Independent School District (HISD).

At a very young age, Frye decided she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a psychologist. However, as her education progressed she discovered that she could practice psychology and also help children. Frye knew that UH was the school to help her achieve her dreams. “At the time that I was applying for doctoral programs,” says Frye, “the School Psychology program was obtaining their American Psychological Association accreditation and provided me with the opportunities to conduct research and practica experiences with a diverse group of individuals within one of the largest cities in the country.”

Frye also credits Thomas Kubiszyn, the former chair of what is now the Department of Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences (PHLS), and her advisor, PHLS assistant professor Milena Keller-Margulis as inspirations while at the college. “Dr. Kubiszyn encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone in regards to my writing skills and always encouraged me to take charge of all of the opportunities presented to me”, said Frye.

Frye is currently employed with HISD as a licensed psychologist and practicum coordinator. She currently supervises two practicum students, one post-doctoral fellow, and is part of the internship committee. In addition to her work with HISD, Frye recently co-founded her own editing company, Kesworx, with a fellow UH grad, in order to provide affordable editing and formatting services to students and professionals.
