Delandra Hampton Named Graduate Advisor of the Month by the UH Graduate School

Delandra HamptonThe University of Houston, College of Education (UH COE) prides itself on its exemplary advising staff, who guide our students on their path to success. Delandra Hampton, graduate advisor in UH COE, has just confirmed what we already knew by being named Advisor of the Month for April 2016 by the UH Graduate School.

Each month, the Graduate School recognizes an advisor for outstanding work in the graduate community and in their own department or college, and according to Hampton’s supervisor, Jessica Zorola, the award is well-deserved. “As an advisor, Delandra has made a positive impact on our college’s graduate admissions,” said Zorola. “And in her new role as graduate academic advisor, Delandra will become a counselor for our master’s students across all college departments. We are confident that Delandra will positively affect student retention and graduation, thus creating improvements to our college’s student success.”

Hampton always knew she wanted to help and inspire people to do great things, and academic advising has been a great venue to do so. Dozens of students come through the office every week, and assisting them takes a special blend of patience, knowledge, creative thinking, and, not surprisingly, nurturing. “I recently had a CUIN Ph.D. [Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction] student who was contemplating applying to the graduate program and was doubting their ability to get into the program,” said Hampton. “I encouraged the student to apply and the student got into the program.”  Later on, the student came back to thank her for taking the time to meet with her and discuss the program requirements. “She even wanted to take a photo together,” said Hampton. “It was the most rewarding thing ever.”

Thank you for all of your hard work, Delandra! You make us Cougar Proud.
